Richard McNicol - Animateur/Creative Director

In 1977, whilst still a flute player in the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Richard McNicol founded the Apollo Trust with the aim of persuading orchestras to enter the world of education by taking part in creative music projects with pupils and their teachers in schools.

Since leaving the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1981 to pursue this work full time, Richard McNicol has initiated and led hundreds of education projects and concerts with orchestras throughout the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Israel, Canada and the USA.

For 13 years, from 1993, he was the London Symphony Orchestra's Music Animateur where he initiated the LSO Discovery education programme, devised and led projects and conducted more than 150 family and children's concerts.

He is frequently brought in as a consultant when orchestras begin their own education programmes, a role that has taken him to many countries. In 2002 McNicol was invited by Sir Simon Rattle to create an education programme for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. The ensuing and enormously influential programme Zukunft@BPhil continues to have a significant impact both within the city and throughout Germany.

He currently leads the education programme of the Klavier Festival Ruhr and presents concerts and projects with the Orchestre de Paris and elsewhere in France and Germany.

In 2004, Richard McNicol was awarded Honorary Membership of the Royal Philharmonic Society in recognition of his pioneering work in music education.
